The shopping center, known as the Marler Stern , in the city center of Marl in North Rhine-Westphalia has a sales area of around 58,000 m², making it not only the largest shopping center in the region between Essen and Münster , but also one of the largest inner-city shopping centers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

history

Southern end of the Marler Stern with VHS die Insel , Bergstrasse and ZOB

The Marler Stern was created at a time when the city was counting more and more inhabitants due to the booming industries of chemistry and mining and the city , which was created by several villages, needed a new city center on the green field . So it was decided in the 1960s and 1970s to build a complex consisting of a shopping center, town hall , city park and several high-rise apartment buildings.

The Stern offers space for 130 shops on two floors, including three large shops that are now occupied by C&A , H&M and Adler Mode . The shopping center mainly houses individual business (clothing, food, decorative items) and chain branches such as Tara M , Gamestop and others.

Since the Karstadt branch was closed ( Hertie for a short time ), the Marler Stern has been struggling with increasing vacancies, especially on the upper shopping street.

In 2018 the FAKT group of companies with its chairman of the board and honorary citizen of the city of Marl, Prof. em. Hubert Schulte-Kemper, the majority in the shopping center. The renovation and new letting started at the same time. The first construction phase was opened in September 2019. With the participation in the Marler Stern the further "drying up" of the Marler Stern could be prevented by giving up business. FAKT AG and another investor are planning the revitalization and new letting of the first floor.

architecture

As an architectural specialty, the Marler Stern offers a construction with air cushions instead of the usual glass or concrete roof. A total of more than six individual, large air cushions span the entire sales area and thus form the largest air cushion roof on the continent. It is therefore also in the Guinness Book of Records .

Location and transport links

The Marler Stern has been part of the new Marler city center since it was built. This was designed as a car-free zone, which is why the shopping center has no “direct” access to motorways. It is roughly in the geographical center of the city and is surrounded by Creiler Platz (including town hall and city park), the residential high- rise Wohnen West , the half-timbered house (VHS die Insel ), the forum (with central bus station and train station) and the extension built in the 2000s .

The Marler Stern can be reached by bus, taxi or train via the bus station, which after the renovation was integrated barrier-free at the entrance of the Stern via the forum. The shopping center can be reached by car via Bergstrasse or Hervester Strasse . Small access roads and underpasses lead to the multi-storey car parks and underground garages. Only since the renovation of the Bergstrasse has the Marler Stern been directly surrounded by a car road for a short stretch.

The city center bypass roads run in close proximity to the shopping center, and the B 225 , the A 43 ( Münster - Wuppertal ) and the A 52 ( Mönchengladbach - Marl) run through the city . These can be reached within about five minutes by car.
