Marlies Veldhuijzen van Zanten was born in Gothenburg in 1953 as the daughter of a Dutch woman and a Swede , where she lived for some time. At a young age she came to the Netherlands, where she studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam . After completing her doctorate, she specialized in geriatrics and became a resident doctor who worked intensively with nursing homes . Veldhuijzen van Zanten subsequently worked as a manager in various retirement homes. In addition, from 1984 to 1989 she was chairwoman of the professional association of doctors specializing in nursing. Since 1993, she has represented her professional association in the Huisarts en Verpleeghuisarts Registratie Commissie , whose tasks are comparable to an association of statutory health insurance physicians . In addition to her professional activity, Veldhuijzen van Zanten was a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and coordinator between the academy and the National Think Tank Foundation , which deals with social problems. The doctor was also active with the Soroptimists .

Political career

At the beginning of October, Veldhuijzen van Zanten was asked by the current Minister for Economic Affairs, Maxime Verhagen , whether she wanted to take on the post of State Secretary. After she said yes, she became a member of the Christian Democratic Party.

As part of its inauguration, there was a confrontation between the Party for Freedom of Geert Wilders , the minority government of CDA and People's Party for Freedom and Democracy tolerated, and those two parties. The background was Veldhuijzen van Zanten's dual citizenship ( Dutch and Swedish). Wilders asked the budding state secretary to surrender her Swedish passport, but could not get her way with this demand. Wilders referred to a similar case in the previous government: At that time, Rutte had criticized the dual citizenship (Dutch, Turkish) of State Secretary Nebahat Albayrak . Rutte pointed out that Turkey does, however, require its citizens to perform certain duties, such as military service, whereas the Swedish state does not link such duties to citizenship. Veldhuijzen van Zanten was admitted to the Rutte I cabinet as State Secretary on October 14, 2010 and was State Secretary until November 5, 2012.
