The Mars Glacier is a glacier in the southeastern part of the Alexander I Island, west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It flows south to the ice shelf in George VI Sound , which it reaches between the Two Step Cliffs and the Phobos Ridge .
It was first sighted and photographed during an overflight on November 23, 1935 by the American polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth . These aerial photographs were used by the US cartographer WLG Joerg for an initial mapping. The Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey carried out a survey in 1949. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after the planet Mars in 1955 .
