The prize has been awarded since 1959, with an interruption between 1977 and 1988 due to the military dictatorship of the process of national reorganization . In 1992, the current concept was introduced, which, in addition to the Martín Fierro in Gold, the main prize, provides several categories in which a Martín Fierro in silver is awarded. Because of the dominance of the radio and television stations in the city of Buenos Aires , a separate prize has been awarded since 1991 for formats of the production facilities outside the capital, the Martín Fierro del Interior .

The award was presented by the epic Martín Fierro by José Hernández named the life of a gaucho describes. Therefore the statuette is also a gold- or silver-colored gaucho figure.
