The Martello Tower ( English Martello Tower ) is a national monument of the African state of Sierra Leone . It is located at the Parliament building of Sierra Leone in the capital Freetown . It is a defensive tower modeled on the Martello Towers in the UK .
Prior to the completion of Fort Thornton , the Martello Tower served as a defense tower to protect Freetown. The tower is located on what is now Tower Hill , which was named after him (previously "Wansey Hill"). According to tradition, the tower was never used for defense. The tower served as a water tower from 1870 .
