The wayside shrine in Dimbach

The so-called torture picture is a wayside shrine in the area of the Volkach district of Dimbach . It is located on the Kunzenberg in the Wolfsberg-Flur in the northwest of the village.

history

The foundation of the wayside shrine fell in the period around 1600. At that time the Counter Reformation , which had been initiated in Franconia by the Würzburg prince-bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , reached its climax. The turmoil of the Thirty Years' War , which began in 1618, let the real reasons for building and the founder of the torture fall into oblivion. The weathering of the inscription on the wayside shrine also contributed to this.

The beginning of the pilgrimage to the Church of St. Maria de Rosario in Dimbach led in the 1780s to a reinterpretation of the reasons for the erection of the stick. The wolf legend, according to which a woman's child was taken from the predator and only remained safe by stealing the baby Jesus from the Dimbach Madonna of Mercy, was moved to the place of the wayside shrine. The legend says: "The place where it happened is next to the village on the Geroltzhöfer away, with a picture of torture." The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the wayside shrine as a monument under the number D-6-75-174-182 .

description

The wayside shrine is almost three meters high and rectangular. It was built with masonry, and a wider tower ends with a tiled gable roof . Slightly set back, a relief rests in an ogival niche . the crucifixion of Jesus. The crucified one can be seen in the center. The cross divides the relief field into two halves. Two assistant figures on consoles to the left and right of Jesus can no longer be identified due to the progressive weathering.

Two more relief figures below are the reason for the relocation of the wolf legend to this location. Originally the person on the left, probably a woman because of the clothes, held two naked children in their arms. The right person points to them. On the right side of the wayside shrine are the remains of a rectangular inscription . It was already weathered when it was described by Hans Karlinger in 1913.
