Martha Musial (born May 8, 1908 in Berlin ; † October 27, 1995 there ) was a German opera singer. As a soprano in the lyric and youth-dramatic field and as a concert singer, she was one of the most important singers in her hometown.

Life

Martha Musial grew up as the oldest of five children in Berlin-Charlottenburg . She completed her vocal studies with Roberto Vittiglio and Hedwig Francillo-Kaufmann. In 1937 she made her stage debut at the Schwerin State Theater , after which she sang at the Stralsund, Gotha, Posen and Hanover stages. After the Second World War , she was the first German singer to appear on Frankfurter Rundfunk in 1945. From the season 1946/1947 she was engaged at the State Theater of Wiesbaden . But already in March 1947 she received a call to the Städtische Oper in West Berlin through Michael Bohnen for the title role of Aida . In order to be able to fulfill her obligations at both opera houses, the American occupation forces allowed her to commute between Wiesbaden and Berlin in their military aircraft until the Hessian State Theater released her from the contract for Berlin. After her Berlin debut in 1947, another successful appearance as Aida followed in July 1950 in a new production under the direction of Leo Blech .

Her repertoire included Mozart roles in Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte, Figaros Hochzeit and Zauberflöte, the main roles in the Verdi operas Aida, Troubadour, Don Carlos, Macht des Schicksals, Othello and in Wagner's works Tannhäuser and Lohengrin , Meistersinger, Parsifal and Ring des Nibelungen as well as the roles Mimi and Madame Butterfly, Agathe and Euryanthe, Iphigenie in Aulis, composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Antonia (Hoffmann's stories), Nedda (Bajazzo), Duchess (Doctor Faust), daughter ( Cadillac), Helena (Troilus and Cressida), Martha, Hansel etc. In addition, she was an excellent interpreter of the classical operetta, as in Wiener Blut, Gypsy Baron, Boccaccio and begging student. From Berlin she made guest appearances in France, Italy, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia and at the Bregenz Festival. For many years Martha Musial was an indispensable pillar of the ensemble of the Städtische Oper Berlin (from 1961 Deutsche Oper Berlin ).

On January 1, 1959, she said goodbye to the Berlin audience with one of her glamorous roles, as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser. Martha Musial was buried in the Luisenkirchhof, Königin-Elisabeth-Straße, in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
