Martha Zechmeister

Martha Zechmeister-Machhart (* 1956 in Kotting , Austria ) is an Austrian theologian . Since 2009 she has been professor of systematic theology at the Institute of Theology of the Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” in San Salvador, El Salvador .

Live and act

Martha Zechmeister attended elementary school in Ober-Grafendorf and then the economics secondary school in St. Pölten . From 1974 to 1979 she studied theology and religious education at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna .

After joining the Congregatio Jesu (Maria Ward Sisters) (1979) and the novitiate in Bamberg (1979 to 1981), she began a doctoral degree at the University of Vienna , where she worked in 1984 with the work The Trinitarian Inspiration of the Spirituality of Ignatius von Loyola . The Trinity - source and archetype of Christian life for Dr. theol. received his doctorate . She then worked as a contract assistant and from 1987 as a university assistant at the Institute for Fundamental Theology at the University of Vienna.

In 1987 she made her perpetual profession and completed an apprenticeship as a retreat guide until 1989 .

In the following years she held several teaching activities, such as a lecturer for fundamental theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of the Diocese of St. Pölten , as a lecturer for spiritual theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Innsbruck and as a visiting professor at the Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas ” in El Salvador.

In 1997 she qualified as a professor at the University of Vienna with the work of God's night. Erich Przywara's path in negative theology , for which she received the Cardinal Innitzer Prize . In the same year she was made an associate professor. From 1999 to 2008 she was professor for fundamental theology at the University of Passau. Since 2009 she has been a professor at the Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” and since 2012 director of the Teología Latinoamericana master’s course.

Martha Zechmeister was a delegate to the General Congregation of the Congregatio Jesu in 1993 and 2002, where she was given the task of processing the decrees of the Order in 1993. From 2002 to 2008 she was superior of the international study community of the Congregatio Jesu in Passau. Since 1996 she has been a member of the editorial board of the magazine for Christian spirituality Geist und Leben . In 2011 Zechmeister signed the memorandum Church 2011: A necessary departure .
