Martin Čech (born June 2, 1976 in Havlíčkův Brod , Czechoslovakia ; † September 6, 2007 near Havlíčkův Brod, Czech Republic ) was a Czech ice hockey player . During his career, the defender played in the Czech Extraliga , Finnish SM-liiga and Russian Superliga .
Career
Čech began his career in the offspring of BK Havlíčkův Brod before he made his debut in the Extraliga for AC ZPS Zlín in 1993 . Between 1994 and 2001 he was a member of the HC Plzeň squad . Then he played for two seasons in the Finnish SM-liiga with JYP Jyväskylä and the Pelicans Lahti and in the Russian Superliga with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk , HK Sibir Novosibirsk and Salawat Julajew Ufa before returning to the Czech Republic. In the National Team Czech Republic Čech played thirty times. Čech last played in defense at the first division club HC Pardubice .
Čech was known as an inconspicuous player whose style of play was characterized by fairness and diligence. The ice hockey player had an accident on the way back from training on a wet road when his car skidded while overtaking and then hit a traffic sign next to the road and finally hit a concrete pillar. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. Čech and his partner had a daughter who was two years old at the time of his death.
