Martin Gosky (* uncertain: 1586 in Gardelegen ; † June 17, 1656 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German physician and poet of the Baroque period.

Live and act

Nothing is known about Gosky's student days and his first professional years. From 1628 he was first Leibmedicus in Hitzacker and then Court and Leibmedicus in the rank of court counselor to Duke August the Younger in Wolfenbüttel. Gosky's house was on Wolfenbütteler Stadtmarkt; From 1644 Justus Georg Schottelius , with whom Gosky was friends, lived in the same house . For his medical achievements as well as for his poetic work, Gosky was awarded the title of Count Palatinate. In this capacity he distinguished Sigmund von Birken in 1646 as poeta laureatus .

Gosky's lasting importance is based on his 1360-page collection of poems Arbustum et Arboretum Augustaeum , which was printed in 1650 by the Lüneburg publishers Johann Stern and Heinrich Stern in their Wolfenbüttel branch. Over 220 authors contributed to the large-format work, which is magnificently equipped with around 40 illustrations, including the poets Georg Philipp Harsdörffer and Adam Olearius, as well as many other members of the Fruit-Bringing Society . The folio volume contains numerous occasional poems in honor of Duke August the Younger. They are prime examples of panegyric poetry and continue to shape the image of Prince August to this day. Particularly noteworthy are the diverse birthday poems, a rather rare special form of occasional poetry that have come down to us in Gosky's collection.

Gosky's daughter Emerentia married the Lutheran theologian Johann Baldovius in 1639 .
