Martin Hayes (musician)
Martin Hayes (* 1961 in Maghera, County Clare , Ireland) is an important Irish fiddle player.
Life
Hayes was born in the townland of Maghera, about 11 km northeast of Ennis and 5 km northwest of Tulla . As the nephew of Paddy Canny and son of P. Joe Hayes, the founder of the Tulla Céilí Band , he came into contact with traditional Irish folk at an early age . At the age of seven he began to learn the fiddle; at 14 he became the youngest musician of the Tulla Céili Band. Up to the age of 19 he won the All-Ireland Fiddle Championship several times. In 2000 he won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Instrumentalist of the Year.
Hayes emigrated to Chicago and played in various rock and jazz bands. There he met guitarist / mandolinist Dennis Cahill in 1980 , with whom he founded the jazz / rock / fusion band Midnight Court . In the 1990s, Hayes concentrated more on its traditional roots and worked again with Cahill after two solo albums. He now lives in West Hartford , Connecticut.
style
In addition to his roots in Irish folk, Hayes names a wide variety of artists as sources of inspiration on the official website, including the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt , the Spanish viol player Jordi Savall and the jazz saxophonist John Coltrane . The folk lexicon CrossRoots highlights Hayes' melodic and lyrical qualities. With light swing sounds, an extraordinary density of ornamentation and syncopation, he transforms dance melodies into melancholy fantasies.
