Marinus II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marinus II (in the late Middle Ages often erroneously called Martin III ; * in Rome ; † May 946 ) was Pope from October 30, 942 to May 946.

He was of Roman origin and, before his pontificate, presumably cardinal priest of San Ciriaco alle Terme Diocleziane . Marinus was elected as the third Pope on the instructions of Prince Alberich II, who was then almighty in Rome , on whose decisions he was completely dependent. January 945 Berengar II of Ivrea returned to Italy, where he had fled from the Italian King Hugo von Arles at the time of Pope Stephen VIII .

The only greater significance of his pontificate was the conferral of the dignity of Apostolic Vicar on Archbishop Friedrich von Mainz in 946. Only eight real certificates of ownership in Italian episcopal churches and monasteries have come down to us.
