Martin J. Oberman

Martin Jay Oberman (born April 23, 1945 in Springfield, Illinois) is an American lawyer and a member of the Surface Transportation Board .

Life

He was a Page in the US House of Representatives at age 13 and studied at Capital Page School and at home at Butler Grade School and Springfield High School. In 1962 he graduated from the Culver Military Academy . He then studied at Yale University and received in 1966 the BA at the University of Wisconsin , he studied law and was awarded in 1969 the degree in Juris Doctor .

He then worked for the law firm Leibman, Williams, Bennett, Baird and Minow until 1972. That year he became General Counsel on the Illinois Racing Board . During his tenure, he investigated several fraud and corruption cases.

From 1975 to 1987 he was a councilor (Alderman) for the 43rd constituency in Chicago . He was a supporter of the first African-American Mayor Harold Washington (1983-1986).

From 1987 to 1988 he was Chairman of the Shore Protection Commission. He has been working as a lawyer in his own law firm since 1989.

In 1981, 1986 and 1994 he applied unsuccessfully for election as Illinois Attorney General .

From 2013 to 2017 he was a member of the supervisory board of the fourth largest American public transport company, the Chicago Metra . From 2014 he headed this body.

In July 2018, he was appointed by President Donald Trump for the seat of Daniel R. Elliott III. nominated for the Surface Transportation Board until December 31, 2018 and thereafter until December 31, 2023. The confirmation came on January 2, 2019 together with the Republican candidate Patrick J. Fuchs .

Martin J. Oberman is married and has two children.
