Daniel R. Elliott III. (born 1962 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American lawyer. From 2009 to 2017 he was chairman of the American regulatory authority Surface Transportation Board .

Life

Daniel R. Elliott grew up in the Shakers Heights suburb of Cleveland . He received a degree in political science from the University of Michigan in 1985 and his law degree from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1989 .

After graduation, he worked as an attorney in Cleveland and Washington DC. From 1993 to 2009, he served as assistant principal attorney for the United Transportation Union . In June 2009, Elliott was nominated by Barack Obama to chair the Surface Transportation Board and to succeed W. Douglas Buttrey .

The nomination almost went unconfirmed as union chairman Malcolm B. Futhey, in a statement posted on the union's website, attributed it to the union's influence in the Obama administration. Only after an apology from Futhey was the hearing of the candidate continued. After confirmation by the Senate, he took office on August 13, 2009. His regular term of office ended on December 31, 2013. In accordance with statutory regulations, this period was extended to December 31, 2014 at the latest. The Obama administration failed to nominate Elliott for a further term in time. The nomination was made on November 14, 2014, was later withdrawn and renewed on January 13, 2015. This was justified by the fact that the newly elected senators can also vote on the candidate. On June 22, 2015, Elliott was confirmed again. He took up his second term of office on June 26, 2015, which ended on December 31, 2018. Elliott's way of working is criticized by his assessors on the board. Since he often made sole decisions without consultation and coordination with them, the assessor Ann D. Begeman in particular was repeatedly forced to publish a dissenting opinion. With the appointment of Ann D. Begeman as acting head of the agency on January 25, 2017, his appointment as chairman ended. Daniel R. Elliott is still a member of the board. On September 30, 2017, he prematurely ended his term of office and started working for a law firm specializing in labor law.

Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is his cousin.
