Martin Kinner von Scherffenstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Kinner von Scherffenstein (* 1534 in Leobschütz , † March 24, 1597 in Baumgarten ) was a German hymn poet .

Live and act

It was assumed that von Scherffenstein was a student of Philipp Melanchthon and later a poetry professor at the University of Wittenberg , but this cannot be proven. It is more likely that he was a lawyer in his hometown. On the text of the epitaph of Scherffenstein, handed down by Johann Kaspar Wetzel , it is said that he was a syndic for 15 years. According to the inscription, Scherffenstein was secretary in Carnow for the next two years and lived for another 22 years, which he spent on his estate, although no such is known.

Scherffenstein composed several sacred songs; eight of them were included in the hymn book Spiritual Church and House Music (Breslau 1644).
