Odersky received his doctorate from ETH Zurich in 1989 .

Under Niklaus Wirth he was involved in the development of Modula 2 and Oberon . In his own projects, together with Philip Wadler , he later developed the Java- based language Pizza and Generic Java , also a Java extension that implemented support for generic types and led to these being built into Java in 2004.

Odersky has been working at the “École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne” since 1999, where he now teaches programming methods as a professor. There he developed the programming language Funnel based on Petri nets . In 2001 Odersky began developing the Scala programming language , which combines the principles of functional and object-oriented programming. Scala was released in 2004.

In 2011 Odersky founded the company Typesafe (now Lightbend ), which is dedicated to the commercial support of Scala and the Scala framework Akka . Java founder James Gosling is one of the company's advisors .
