Martin Röttger (born February 5, 1970 in Hamburg ) is a musician and author. He plays the drums and the cajón .

Life

Martin Röttger started playing drums at the age of nine. He took lessons from Sir Allen Buckley. He gained his first musical experience in Hamburg clubs such as the “ Fabrik ” or the “Cotton Club”. He later took lessons from Thomas Arp, a teacher at the state youth music school.

When he was twelve he played in the big band at his school. At the age of 14 he founded his own band together with Andrija Brikalin and Olaf Outzen, the “Psychadelic Dungeon”. Their repertoire consisted mainly of songs by Jimi Hendrix . He also played in various rock formations, such as “Lite Works”, which emerged from the Hamburg project “Let a thousand stones roll”.

Other important stations in his musical career were "Blues Package", "Paddy Korn" and other formations on the Hamburg blues scene. He was also a drummer in the bands of Chuck Berry , the Spencer Davis Group and Buddy Guy .

In 2000 he met Abi Wallenstein , who was playing in a duo with Steve Baker (Harp) at the time. In this formation he also established the cajón as the "smallest drum kit in the world". He also played with Yellow Moon and 8 to the bar , two cover bands that play rock , boogie and blues , as well as with Gottfried Böttger , Henry Heggen and other Hamburg musicians.

Today Röttger is one of the most sought-after cajón players in Europe. Due to many inquiries about the cajon and its use after his workshops, Röttger has already written three textbooks for beginners and advanced learners: Martin Röttger's Cajon School - The quick and easy introduction to cajon playing (with CD and DVD) , Cajon styles for drummers and Cajon - instructions for self-study.

Individual evidence

  1. Röttger discovered the cajon at a festival in the late 1990s. Up until now the cajon had mainly been played by percussionists in the flamenco scene, but according to Röttger it contained all the possibilities of a drum kit. He then used it successfully in other musical styles. In pop music in particular , it has proven to be versatile - not just as a percussion instrument.
