Martin Schirmer (born March 1, 1887 in Trebitz (Könnern) , † January 22, 1963 in Bonn ) was a German cultural technician. He worked as a university lecturer at the University of Bonn.

Life

Martin Schirmer studied cultural engineering in Munich . Here he joined the Corps Teutonia in the summer semester of 1906 . After completing his studies as a Dipl.-Ing. and interruption of his scientific career by the First World War, he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. in 1922 at the Technical University of Danzig . PhD. Afterwards he went to the government in Magdeburg, where he became department head for water management . In 1935, the University of Bonn appointed him to succeed August Heimerle as full professor and director of the Institute for Cultural Technology and Improvement . Schirmer increasingly included urban planning in the teaching and research of the institute and thereby achieved an even greater proximity and stronger connection to geodesy. In order to take into account the increasing importance of urban planning in research and teaching, an Extraordinariat for Structural Engineering was established in 1950, to which Edmund Gassner was appointed. The Extraordinariat was attached to the Schirmer Institute, which was now called the Institute for Structural Engineering and Cultural Engineering . Until his retirement in 1954, Schirmer concentrated on agricultural hydraulic engineering and water management. Edmund Gassner succeeded Schirmer as director of the institute.

Martin Schirmer was co-editor of the magazine for cultural technology and land consolidation .
