Martin Theo Krieger (born October 19, 1953 in Lingen / Ems ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Life

Krieger grew up in Lingen / Ems in Lower Saxony . After a broken apprenticeship as a window dresser, he graduated from the Quirinus Gymnasium in Neuss . This was followed by civilian service in Bremen , studying to be a teacher in music, German, and art in Hildesheim , studying theater studies at the Free University of Berlin and studying at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb).

From 1982 to 1992 he worked as a camera assistant, cameraman, sound engineer, actor, screenwriter and director in numerous smaller film and TV productions. His first feature film, Zischke (1986, screenplay and direction), ran successfully at many international festivals, received the Berlin Academy of the Arts Award, the Max Ophüls Festival Award, and was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1987/88 Krieger worked as a lecturer at the dffb. In 1988, Herz über Kopf (screenplay and direction) followed, a ZDF production by the editorial team Das kleine Fernsehspiel , a sarcastic parody of TV game shows.

In the following years he worked as a director / co-director, co-producer, co-author and dramaturgical consultant on various TV and film projects, including Der eightchte Tag (1989, director: Reinhard Münster ) and Mein liebe Mann (1994, director : Eva Maria Bahlrühs) and Demons (2000, director: Frank Castorf ). In the years 1993–2003 his activity focused on work as a screenwriter and dramaturgical consultant.

Twenty years after his debut film, Krieger returned as a filmmaker with Beautiful Bitch (2007, written and directed). Martin Theo Krieger is a member of the German Film Academy and lives in Berlin .
