controversy

In August 2018, Wagener self-published the book Germany's insecure border: A plea for a new protective wall . On the basis of Wagener's statements (he called for internment camps for asylum seekers), the BND had the book checked by an external expert, which aroused greater public attention. The expert came to the conclusion that no misconduct could be ascertained. The BND did not comment on the result of the investigation.

In March 2019, Wagener u. a. takes legal action against his employer for damage to his reputation.
