Sebastian Harnisch

Sebastian Ralph Johannes Harnisch (born February 3, 1967 ) is a German political scientist and full professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Sebastian Harnisch has been Professor of International Relations and Comparative Foreign and Security Policy at the Institute for Political Science at Heidelberg University since 2007 . In 2012 and 2013, Harnisch was visiting professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty .

Harnisch studied political science and history at the University of Trier . After a year abroad at Georgetown University , he completed his Master of Arts in 1993 . The DFG then funded research stays in Seoul ( Yonsei University ) and Tokyo as well as New York ( Columbia University ), and in 1998 Harnisch received his doctorate from the University of Trier with a dissertation on US Korean policy. From 1997 to 2001 he coordinated the internet project “www.deutsche-aussenpolitik.de”. In 2004 he completed his habilitation in Trier, where he held a junior professorship from 2003 to 2006 . Before he was appointed to the University of Heidelberg, Harnisch held a substitute professorship at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich.

Sebastian Harnisch is a board member of the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE), a member of the board of directors of the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) and co-editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Foreign Policy Analysis. Sebastian Harnisch researches topics such as the foreign and security policy of Germany , the USA and the European Union . He is also a recognized expert on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the Korean peninsula .
