Martin Zielke (born January 17, 1963 in Hofgeismar ) is a German manager . He has been a member of the Board of Management of Commerzbank since November 2010 and has been its Chairman since May 2016.

Life

After graduating from the Albert Schweitzer School in 1984, Zielke completed an apprenticeship as a banker at Deutsche Bank in Kassel from 1983 to 1985 . This was followed by a degree in business administration at the Georg-August University in Göttingen, which he completed in 1990 with a degree in business administration.

Zielke is married and has two grown daughters.

Career

Zielke began his career in 1990 in the private customer area of Dresdner Bank . In the course of his work for the bank, he held various positions at several locations. In January 2000, Zielke moved to Deutsche Bank 24 as division manager before becoming division manager at Deutsche Hyp in June 2001 .

Beginning of 2002, Zielke the management of the business segment Private Customers at Commerzbank. He successfully redeveloped the deficit area, for example by expanding the self-service zones. In January 2005, Zielke was promoted to head of corporate banking before moving to Eurohypo as CFO in April 2006 . Commerzbank had taken over the credit institute , which specializes in commercial real estate and public finance , a few months earlier. Thanks to his work for Deutsche Hyp, Zielke already had experience in the real estate industry . In June 2008, Zielke resigned from his position at Eurohypo in order to concentrate fully on his work as Head of Group Finance at Commerzbank. The staff position was newly created at the beginning of 2008.

In November 2010, Zielke was appointed to the Commerzbank Executive Board, chaired by Martin Blessing . There he was again responsible for business with private customers, which was affected by radical changes after the takeover of Dresdner Bank. This included, in particular, the merging of neighboring branches of both banks. Zielke pushed the integration of processes between branches and online banking. He also enforced the starting bonus for the free checking account. Under his leadership, Commerzbank's private customer business achieved increasing profits.

After Blessing announced his withdrawal in November 2015, the Supervisory Board decided in March 2016 to appoint Zielke as CEO. He took office in May 2016. Zielke initiated a comprehensive restructuring of Commerzbank, which essentially means the conversion of the traditional universal bank into a digital technology company. Downsizing is also part of the “Commerzbank 4.0” strategy, which was later revised and expanded under the name “Commerzbank 5.0”. The activist major shareholder Cerberus was dissatisfied with the desired changes. Commerzbank then announced that Zielke had offered to resign as CEO and would leave the bank by the end of 2020 at the latest.

Zielke is a member of the board of directors of the Association of German Banks . In April 2020 he was elected President of this association, succeeding Hans-Walter Peters .
