Martin van Cleve
Martin van Cleve (* 1520 Antwerp ; † 1570 ) was a Flemish painter . He is the son of the painter Wilhelm the Younger and was closely associated with his brother Heinrich, who had a great influence on his artistic career.
Martin studied under Frans Floris and discovered his love for landscape painting . His brother Heinrich later convinced Martin to deal with figurative painting. Here historical subjects became his favorites, but he also successfully devoted himself to genre painting . After initial attempts at large compositions based on Italian models, he only painted small pictures.
In 1551 Martin van Cleve became a member of the Antwerp Academy and Guild of St. Luke . He never traveled outside of his native Flanders and died of gout at the age of fifty . Martin had four sons, all of whom became painters.
