Georg and Martin of Cluj-Napoca
The brothers Georg and Martin von Klausenburg are among the leading sculptors of the second half of the 14th century in Europe.
Little is known of the life of the two siblings. You were born around 1350 during the time of Louis the Great , King of Hungary . Father Nikolaus was a painter from Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania .
The only thing that has been preserved is its equestrian statue of St. George in the Prague Castle Courtyard from 1373, a work of high Gothic with stylistic anticipations of the Renaissance . It is about half life-size and shows Georg stabbing the dragon. The free-standing bronze monument was novel at the time. The courtly, elegant portrayal of the saint is characteristic. Copies made later are in Budapest and Cluj-Napoca.
Of the works by the brothers Georg and Martin that have not survived, three bronze sculptures from around 1370 and a gilded equestrian statue from 1390 showing the king and saint Ladislaus are known. They stood in Großwardein until they were melted down in the 17th century .
