Martti Larni

Martti Johannes Laine (born September 22, 1909 in Pakila ; † March 7, 1993 in Helsinki ; from 1942 Martti Larni) was a Finnish writer and journalist . He was chairman of the Association of Finnish Authors from 1964 to 1967. He wrote under his name and under the pseudonyms Aslak Nuorti ( Lappish ) and Dan Astaire (also Dan Aster ).

Life

Larni was born the fourth of nine children to the painter Viktor Laine and Matilda Puntila. The summers he worked as a shepherd in his childhood he later processed in his work Hyvien himisten kylä . He worked as a horticultural assistant, tried his hand at business and studied at the school of the cooperative movement. From 1937 to 1943 Larni worked as an editor for Elanto , the magazine of one of the largest cooperatives in Finland. In 1946 he was appointed department head of the Elanto consumer cooperative . Larni married Gurli Viola Zetterström in 1936. From 1948 to 1949 and from 1951 to 1954 he lived in the state of Wisconsin , United States .

Act

At the age of 15 he wrote his first poems and short stories. Larni began his literary career as a poet. Some of these pieces were published in Juttutupa magazine in 1926 . In 1928 he became a member of the Nuoren Voiman Liitto literary association founded in 1921 . During the Second World War he wrote scripts for the production company Suomi-Filmi Oy, including Tuomari Martta , which was based on Ilmari Turja's play. He also worked on various film projects with the director Valentin Vaala. After harsh criticism of his novella Kuilu , he took a creative break and changed his name to leave his previous work behind.

In his novels he satirically treats the situation of bankrupt merchants at the time of the economic crisis in the 30s, the "American way of life" of the 50s, the machinations of the bourgeois entrepreneurs and their bigotry as benefactors, the blind veneration of the West and criticizes the West Politics. In his works he also repeatedly addresses the life of ordinary workers.

After the publication of the Russian translation of his satirical novel Neljäs nikama eli veijari vastoin tahtoaan (1957, The fourth vertebra, or a scamp despite himself ) , Larni became the most well-known Finnish author in the Soviet Union , although he did not learn about the Russian edition. since the Soviet Union had not signed the Bern Convention on Copyright Matters .

Larni's works have been translated into about 20 languages.
