Mary Roach (* 1959 in Etna (New Hampshire) , United States ) is an American columnist and author of popular science non-fiction.

Life

She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wesleyan University . Her writing career began with the San Francisco Zoological Society , for which she wrote press releases . In 1986 she sold a gloss on the IRS to the San Francisco Chronicle . This was followed by a series of humorous essays for magazines such as Sports Illustrated , Vogue , The New York Times Magazine , Discover , Outside , Reader's Digest and GQ .

Her book Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal (Oneworld) was shortlisted for the Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books 2014. This British award is endowed with £ 2,500 prize money for nominees.
