Masao Kida ( Japanese 木田 優 夫 Kida Masao ; born September 12, 1968 in Kokubunji City , Tokyo Metropolis , Japan ) is a former professional Japanese baseball pitcher. From 1999 to 2000 he played for the Detroit Tigers . From 2003 to 2005 he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball .

Career

After Kida graduated from Nippon University High School (English for the Nihon University- affiliated Meisei High School in Uenohara City , Yamanashi Prefecture ), he was selected in 1987 in the first round of the draft by the Yomiuri Giants . In 1990 he won 12 games, recorded the most strikeouts in the league, and was selected for the All-Star game. In the 1997 season he was operated on on his right elbow. In 1998 it was given to Orix BlueWave in exchange with Takahito Nomura. this year he achieved 16 saves.

In 1999 he signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent, but was demoted to the minor league after a short time . In June 2000 he returned to the BlueWave again. There he was released in 2001 and did not play for any team for the 2002 season. In 2003 he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played there in the minor league. In March 2003, he and his translator were involved in a car accident and were hospitalized. Kida was not seriously injured, but his translator was seriously injured. In August of that year he was promoted to the major league, but only played in three games. In 2004 he moved to the Seattle Mariners. There he only appeared once in the 2005 season and was released at the end of the season.

After discharge Kida returned and played until 2012. Japanese professional baseball league ( NPB ). From 2012 to 2014 he played for the Ishikawa Million Stars in the Baseball Challenge League, a Japanese minor league whose teams are independent of the NPB teams. The Million Stars held a ceremony for Kida on September 14, 2014, in which it was decided that his number 12 will never be awarded again.

Since the 2019 season he has been a trainer for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters .
