The Shahid Hashemi Nedschad International Airport ( Mashhad International Airport or Shahid Hashemi Nejad Airport ) is a civil and military used airport in Mashhad , Iran . The airport is the third largest in Iran after Tehran-Mehrabad and Tehran-Imam Khomeini . 57 destinations around the world are served from the airport. It serves as a hub for Iran Airtour and Mahan Air .

Airlines and destinations

Iran Airtour and Mahan Air operate a hub in Mashhad . The only routes to Europe are offered by Germania to Hamburg and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul .

Incidents

  • On September 1, 2006, a Tupolev Tu-154 slid over the end of the runway and went up in flames. At that time there were 147 passengers in the aircraft, 29 of whom died. The Tu-154 flew the Bandar Abbas -Mashhad route.
  • On July 24, 2009, an Ilyushin Il-62 of Aria Air (UP-I6208) crashed on the Tehran-Mashhad route with 153 passengers and burned out; 3 passengers and 13 crew members died.
  • On January 24, 2010, a Russian-registered Tupolev Tu-154M of Taban Air (RA-85787) crashed when the pilot attempted an emergency landing due to a medical emergency. All 157 passengers and thirteen crew members survived the accident, 42 passengers were slightly injured. The Tupolev Tu-154M had to be written off.
