Masist Gül

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Masist Gül (* 1947 in Istanbul ; † 2003 ibid) was a Turkish draftsman, poet and actor of Armenian origin. He was a bodybuilder and played minor roles in more than 300 films, mostly playing the roles of the bad and the strong due to his physique.

His drawings, comics, collages and poems only became known after his death and were made available to a wider audience at the 5th Berlin Biennale in 2008. Masist Gül drew an unfinished, six-part comic series with the title Kaldırım Destanı (for example: "Gutter myth"), in which a spindly main character as a "Gutter Wolf" or "Toilet Rat" ( hela faresi ) leads the fight for survival. The period of history extends from 1905 to 1978. The work was published in 2006.

The clearly present masculinity in Gül's pictures and drawings is broken up by the hopelessness and melancholy of the accompanying poems or titles.
