Açıkyol massacre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The massacre of Açıkyol found on March 7, 1987 in the Kurdish village Açıkyol (original name: Haferi ) in the district of Nusaybin in Mardin province instead. The perpetrators were PKK fighters, the victims were Kurdish villagers. At that time the village had about 200 inhabitants. It is about 15 km north of Nusaybin near the Syrian border .

procedure

On the evening of March 7, 1987, 25 to 30 ARGK fighters - this is the name of the armed arm of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) at the time - attacked the houses of two families in the village at around 9 p.m. and opened fire. The tank of a motorcycle was hit and caught fire. The fire spread to the house and the PKK fighters shot automatic weapons at those who were leaving the house in a panic. The other house attacked was on the edge of the village. In the attack, the PKK fighters killed eight people, two adults and six children. However, after counting the villagers, nine people died because the woman who was killed was pregnant. Armed resistance came from some of the villagers. Before that, around 20 villagers had met to watch television at the village Agha, four of whom were armed. After the attack, the PKK members withdrew across the Syrian border, which led to diplomatic tensions in both states.

reasons

The reason for the attack was the fact that the male family members had committed themselves to the Turkish state as village guards . The attack also served to spread the name of the PKK around the world. According to the village agha, there were also specific reasons. Some of the Apocus (followers of Öcalan) were members of the hostile Eşiret of the Ömeryan and had used the opportunity to settle the matter. In addition, the PKK's struggle at the time was mainly directed against feudal Kurdish structures, which the party believes contributed to Kurdistan being a semi-feudal and semi-capitalist colony of Turkey.

PKK perpetration

The PKK claimed responsibility for the execution in the party newspaper Serxwebûn . On March 7, 1987, “15 militiamen were punished” there. Another 10 were injured.

In May 1987 a PKK fighter surrendered who also reported that the attacks were on the account of the PKK. A few months later the PKK carried out the Pınarcık massacre in the same province with 34 victims.

Aftermath

The raids caused controversy within the PKK, which was openly revealed at the Party's 4th Congress in 1990. With the murder of the adversary Mehmet Şener , Abdullah Öcalan decided this power struggle for himself.

Official memorial services are held regularly in Açıkyol. Near the village, the gravesites of the victims were turned into a martyrs cemetery in accordance with an ordinance of the Interior Minister in 2017.
