Massimo Mattioli (born September 25, 1943 in Rome ; † August 23, 2019 there ) was an Italian underground artist and draftsman .

His main work often takes place in a candy-colored world, full of cute animal characters à la Tex Avery , who are led to a truck in the course of his stories, only to die in cruel, brutal, pornographic and vulgar scenes in the end. His provocative work was a source of inspiration for the flash cartoon series Happy Tree Friends .

Mattioli died on August 23, 2019 in Rome at the age of 75 after an illness.

Works

Mattioli started his career in 1965 for the Italian magazine "Il Vittorioso", where he created his first comic book " Vermetto sight ". After a trip to London (he worked in Mayfair ) he moved to France, where he worked for the comic magazine " Pif Gadget " until 1973 , and thus for a child audience. He returned to Italy in 1973 and created the comic Pinky for the magazine “Il giornalio” : a pink rabbit reporter. In 1977 he founded the underground magazine “Cannibal” with Stefano Tamburini , where he published his comic book Joe Galaxy . In 1980 he founded the magazine "Frigidaire", where he created his most famous comics Squeak the mouse and Superwest , which both contain bloodbaths, sex, cruel murders and mutilations of animal figures.

Awards

Mattioli has received several awards including the French Phenix Award in 1971, the Yellow Kid in 1975, and Romics d'Oro in 2009.
