Matador (magazine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matador (spelling: MATADOR) is a German men's magazine that was published by Bauer Verlagsgruppe from 2004 to 2008 and has been published by Ocean Global since 2017.

On March 11, 2004, the men's and lifestyle magazine Matador appeared for the first time under the slogan “Men want to know”. The publisher was the Bauer Verlagsgruppe, formerly the publisher of Playboy magazine , which was the first to develop a title for this market segment in Germany after the publisher no longer had a license to distribute the German Playboy edition.

The publisher described the magazine as a booklet-in-booklet concept that should cover the typical male interests from the publisher's point of view: engine, erotic, technology, style, sport and knowledge. Initially the magazine appeared every two months, from September 2004 it was switched to a monthly edition. In August 2006 the anniversary edition appeared with the “most beautiful women from 25 Matador editions”. Since 2007, an additional fashion supplement with the latest men's collections has been published four times a year.

In 2007 the German Press Council reprimanded the magazine for violating the press code . It had published a photo of a model in front of a refrigerator, in which products from a single manufacturer of ice cream could be seen. The press council rated this as surreptitious advertising.

In a press release from March 27, 2008, the publisher announced: “The men's lifestyle magazine 'Matador' (...) will be discontinued with issue number 6. In an extraordinarily difficult market environment, the economic goals could not be achieved. ”According to the publisher, the magazine recently had a circulation of 163,041 copies (IVW 4/2007). According to the publisher, 16 editorial staff were affected by the hiring.

Since October 2017, the magazine has been published every two months by the Kiel publisher Ocean Global, which has acquired a license for it from the Bauer Media Group.
