Mate Solis (born July 21, 1935 in Zadar , Croatia ; † November 12, 2019 in Cres , Croatia) was a Croatian painter , sculptor and illustrator .

Life

After his school days on Cres and in Rijeka , Solis first attended the arts and crafts school and then studied at the Zagreb Art Academy until 1962 .

Back in his homeland, Solis opened his own studio in the harbor district of Cres, where he lived and worked until his death.

Works

Solis became famous for depicting scenes from everyday life in his homeland in watercolor and oil. Typical of his style is the representation of his motifs in intense, bright colors.

In 1975 he created a memorial to the soldiers who fell in World War II, which was erected on the promenade in his hometown.

His pictures have been reproduced in many travel guides and books about Cres and thus decisively shaped the “visual identity” of the island.
