Helbling's first task as Viennese cathedral builder was the restoration of the spire of the high tower of St. Stephan, which had been damaged by lightning strike on July 21, 1437, which had only been completed shortly before, in 1433. The construction of the hall longhouse was then pushed forward under his direction. Part of the north wall was completed by 1440 (inscription on the cornice), after which the construction of the free pillars began. Helbling's spatial concept was based on a conservative hall church with simple ribbed vaults.
