Hans von Prachatitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans von Prachatitz (Czech Jan z Prachatic ) (* presumably in Prachatice , Bohemia ; † between 1435 and 1437 in Vienna ), was a Bohemian-Austrian architect and stonemason and from 1429 master builder of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna .

Life

Hans von Prachatitz initially worked as a stonemason under cathedral builder Peter von Prachatitz at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, although the relationship - whether brother or son - remains unclear. Since November 1416 he has been recorded as his parlier , after his death in 1429 he took over his position as master builder at St. Stephen's. His marriage to Kathrei Spiegler resulted in three daughters - Magdalen, Barbara and Anna. Mathes Helbling has been documented as his successor as Viennese master builder since October 1437 .

During the term of office of Hans von Prachatitz in 1433, the high tower of St. Stephan was completed, which at that time was the tallest church building. Above all, the unusual design of the tower helmet can be traced back to his planning, which, compared to its model, the Freiburg Minster Tower , is much more vertical and formally denser thanks to the insertion of eyelashes .
