Peter von Prachatitz

Peter von Prachatitz ( Czech Petr z Prachatic ; *? Maybe in Prachatice , Bohemia ; † February 1429 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian-Austrian architect and stonemason who was mainly involved in the construction of St. Stephen's Cathedral .

Life

The stonemason from Bohemia worked under cathedral builder Wenzel Parler at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and after his death in summer 1404 he took over the office of cathedral builder and held this office until his death. He worked on the project of the south tower; its architectural concept envisaged a gradual taper and probably also a greater height. In 1426 the demolition of the walls of the Romanesque nave began ; accordingly Prachatitz must have started the elevation of the new nave walls. He died in Vienna between February 5 and 19, 1429. The south tower was only completed in 1433 by his successor Hans von Prachatitz (with whom no relationship can be proven).

Peter Prachatitz is also attributed the west facade of the Maria am Gestade church . He probably had close ties to the Prague Cathedral Works .
