Wenceslaus Parler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wenzel Parler (* before 1360 probably in Prague ; † 1404 in Vienna ) was one of the most important cathedral builders and sculptors from the Parler dynasty, son of Peter Parler . He worked in Prague, Nördlingen and Vienna, among others .

The first work of Wenceslas Parler can be traced back to the 2nd half of the 1370s in Prague , where he worked at least until 1392 (but possibly not continuously) and was significantly involved in the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral . He is proven in Prague as Ingegnere Venceslao da Praga . He had left Prague by 1398 at the latest, when his younger brother Johann Parler the Younger took over the management of the cathedral. After that he was probably working on the construction of the St. Salvator Church in Nördlingen . From 1400 he appeared as a stonemason in St. Stephen's Church in Vienna , where he became master builder in 1403. Italian ambassadors wanted him from therePoach Milan , where he was to become the master builder of the cathedral . From 1392 a Henrico parlér da Gamodia ( Gmünd ) was found in Milan , possibly Heinrich Parler the Elder . J. ( Heinrich von Gmünd ), a cousin of Wenzel Parler. Wenzel no longer came to Milan as a master builder; he died in 1404.

The identity of the cathedral builders in Prague and Vienna is not completely secured. Wenzel was a common name in Bohemia and southern Germany at that time, and Parler is derived from Parlier (now Polier ), which means construction manager. The chronological sequence and clear stylistic parallels between Prague's St. Vitus Cathedral and St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna make a common identity likely.
