Slapton is a village in the district of South Hams in Devon County , England . It is close to the A379 road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth . In 2011 the community had 434 inhabitants . The parish is surrounded by the following locations, starting from the north in a clockwise direction : Blackawton, Strete , Stokenham and East Allington. Slapton was mentioned as Sladone in the Domesday Book . The Academic Choir of St Mary was founded in 1372 or 1373 by Sir Guy Brian . St. James Church was built in the late 13th or early 14th century.

Because Slapton Sands (between Slapton and Torcross) resembled Utah Beach in Normandy , the Western Allies trained the invasion of Normandy in 1944. On April 28, 1944, the military exercise Exercise Tiger took place in Slapton , which ended in disaster and which is now remembered by the Exercise Tiger Memorial . However, the Allies were able to draw important conclusions from the failure and successfully carry out the invasion in June.
