Mathias Gnädinger - The love of his life is a Swiss documentary film from 2016 by Stefan Jäger . It is a homage to the Swiss folk actor Mathias Gnädinger, who died in 2015 . The 80-minute film was released in German-Swiss cinemas on April 7, 2016. On April 1, 2018, on the occasion of the third anniversary of his death, the shorter, 52-minute TV version was broadcast on SRF 1.

The documentation describes Mathias Gnädinger's life and work, his works and creations. Gnädinger has worked in numerous theaters, television and cinema films. Many impressions of this are treated visually in the film, including some recordings of selected plays. His wife Ursula Gnädinger knows him better than anyone. She tries to explain how she deals with the grief and with the impressive legacy of culture that he left behind. Gnädinger met his wife at the age of twelve. In between, it drove them in different directions, but after the turn of the millennium they met again and came together - an unusual love story.

Due to his sudden death in 2015, the Swiss director Stefan Jäger decided to follow in Gnädinger's footsteps. How things can go on for those affected after death and what death means, Mathias quotes with a saying by Niklaus Meienberg in his farewell letter: "You are only dead when nobody remembers you". According to Jäger, this statement was the reason for him to search for clues.
Stefan Jäger had already carried out several projects with Gnädinger. He directed the film with his last role (Anton Sommer in The Big Summer ).
