Mathraki ( Greek Μαθράκι ( n. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ maˈθrakʲi ]) is a small Greek island in the Ionian Sea , which belongs to the Diapontian Islands and is part of the Ionian Islands . The island, only about three square kilometers in size (4 km long, up to 1.5 km wide), is about ten kilometers from the northwest coast of Corfu . The highest point is the Vouno or Samothraki at 150 meters .
Until 2010, Mathraki was an independent municipality ( Greek κοινότητα kinotita ) within the prefecture of Corfu with a few small surrounding islets , since the administrative reform in 2010 it has belonged to the new municipality of Kerkyra , where it has since formed one of 15 municipal districts.
Mathraki was used for agriculture by residents of Othoni from the 17th century , but it was not until the end of the 19th century that some families completely moved to the island. Today a good 300 inhabitants live on Mathraki, mainly in the two small hamlets Ano Mathraki (Upper Mathraki) and Kato Mathraki (Lower Mathraki) . They live from agriculture (mainly olive cultivation) and the still very sparse tourism, partly also from remittances from emigrated residents.
There is a regular ferry connection (depending on the weather) with the Corfiot capital Kerkyra and in the summer months with the holiday resorts on the northwest coast of Corfu. A beautiful beach near the landing stage is ideal for swimming. Most visitors only stay a few hours on the island, they have a few taverns available.
