The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of its own measurements and with the help of aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1959 and 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1966 after William P. Matikonis (1939-1998), officer of the ship safety on the icebreaker USS Glacier from 1961 to 1962.
