Matt James Chapman (born April 28, 1993 in Victorville , California ) is an American baseball player for the Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball (MLB). In 2018 he won the Fielding Bible Award, the Gold Glove Award and the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award. In 2019 he received the Gold Glove Award again.

Career

Chapman attended El Toro High School in Lake Forest , California and California State University , Fullerton , where he played college baseball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans. The Oakland Athletics selected Chapman in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft .

After signing, he made his debut with the Arizona League Athletics in a rookie league. After three games he was promoted to the Class-A team Beloit Snappers. In 50 games for Beloit, he beat .237 with five home runs and 20 run batted in (RBI). At the end of the season he also played in a game for the Double-A Midland RockHounds. He spent his entire 2015 season on the Class A-Advanced Team Stockton Ports, where he had a batting average of .250 with 23 home runs and 57 RBIs in 80 games. Chapman was invited to the Oakland Athletics Spring Training in 2016 . He started the season with Midland and was promoted to Triple-A Team Nashville Sounds in August, where he finished the season with seven home runs and 13 RBIs in 18 games. He was named Texas League Player of the Year for 2016. Chapman started the 2017 season in Nashville. He suffered a wrist injury and was on the disabled list for two weeks.

Oakland Athletics

Chapman was promoted to Athletics on June 15, 2017, and made his Major League debut that night. In 49 games for Stockton, he hit .257 with 16 home runs and 30 RBIs prior to his promotion. On June 16, Chapman had his first Major League success, collecting three RBIs against the New York Yankees . On September 6, Chapman was kicked out of a game by referee Mike Everitt for fighting with Los Angeles Angels catcher Juan Graterol . He spent the remainder of the season with Oakland, hitting .234 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs in 84 games.

Chapman was placed on the Disabled List on June 16, 2018 with a bruised right thumb and re-enabled on July 3. Chapman ended his 2018 season with a batting average of .278 with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs. On October 29th, Chapman received a Fielding Bible Award. On November 4th, Chapman received the Rawlings Gold Glove Award and won the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award with his former high school teammate Nolan Arenado . On December 14, 2018, Chapman had an operation on his left shoulder.
