Matt Wells (born December 14, 1886 in Walworth , London , Great Britain , † June 27, 1953 Walworth , London) was a British boxer and normal boom .

Career

Among the amateurs, Wells was the English champion from 1904 to 1907. He entered the lightweight at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London . He lost it in the quarterfinals against the eventual Olympic champion Frederick Grace .

Wells' first two fights in professional boxing each ended in a "no contest". On August 8, 1910, he beat Freddie Welsh over 20 rounds on points and was thereby British and European champion .

In March 1914 he became world welterweight champion and remained so until his defeat by his American challenger Jack Britton in June 1915.
