The Matterhorn Museum “Zermatlantis” is located in Zermatt in the canton of Valais in Switzerland . It shows the development of Zermatt from a mountain farming village to a world-famous tourist destination as well as the history of the first ascent of the Matterhorn on July 14, 1865.

Only the cash register is located in the entrance area on the ground floor, the actual museum is located underground. A higher-lying gallery leads around a lower-lying village, which was rebuilt from original houses. The center is a cobbled village square around which 14 buildings are grouped. On display are, for example, the mountain guide's house, a dairy, a residential building, the replica staircase and the reception of the old Monte Rosa hotel, a warehouse, a stable with farm animals, a church and the rectory.

One focus of the museum is the portrayal of the drama of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper , who reached the summit on July 14, 1865 together with father and son Peter Taugwalder , Michel Croz , Francis Douglas , Robert Hadow and Charles Hudson , but with the Crash of four of the seven participants ended. In addition to equipment and leftover clothing, the broken original rope is exhibited.

The history of the Matterhorn north face ascent and the performance of alpinist Yvette Vaucher is also shown. The work of the Zermatt mountain guide Ulrich Inderbinen (1900–2004), who climbed the Matterhorn 371 times, is also documented.

Also records and achievements of alpinists from today on the 4000m in the area are shown. A relief of the Matterhorn shows the climbing routes with luminous lines. Excerpts from the film “ Der Berg ruft ” by Luis Trenker , which was filmed in Zermatt in 1937/1938, will also be shown.

Other exhibits include a stone ax from the Neolithic Age, as well as found objects and remains of the unknown who died around 1600 on the Theodul Glacier .

The museum is wheelchair accessible. Audio guides in German, English, French and Japanese are available. Books and other information material are sold at the entrance.
