Matthew I (Beaumont)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthew I (French: Mathieu ; † January 1, 1155 ) was a Count of Beaumont-sur-Oise from the House of Beaumont-sur-Oise . He was a son of Count Ivo III. von Beaumont-sur-Oise and his second wife Adelais. Matthew I probably built the castle in Beaumont-sur-Oise .

In league with his brother-in-law Burkhard III. of Montmorency , Matthew feuded the Abbey of Saint-Denis at the turn of the century in 1100 , which provoked a military intervention by the French Crown Prince Louis (VI) the Fat . Even against his own father, Count Hugo of Clermont, he waged war for the possession of the fief Luzarches . He had already received half of this area as a dowry from his wife, but he also claimed the other half. After Matthew had conquered the castle of Luzarches, Count Hugo called the Crown Prince for help, who came with an army and drove Matthew out of Luzarches again. Then he was besieged by the prince in the castle of Chambly , but was able to repel him and also wounded him. Because this escalation was not in Matthew's sense, the parties decided on a peaceful solution to the conflict, in which Matthew reconciled with his father-in-law.

In 1119 he fought for the French king in the Battle of Brémule against the Anglo-Normans.

Matthew I was married to Beatrix, a daughter of Count Hugo von Clermont-en-Beauvaisis and Margaret von Roucy. They had several children, including Count Matthew II († 1174).
