Matthaeus Deisch
Matthaeus Deisch (born July 18, 1724 in Augsburg , † January 28, 1789 in Danzig , Polish Prussia ) was a German engraver in Danzig.
Life
Matthaeus Deisch grew up in Augsburg, one of the most important European centers of the copper engraving trade. There he learned from Georg Philipp Rugendas and Georg Kilian .
A first stay in Gdansk is known from 1744, and in 1749 he finally settled there. In 1754 Deisch was facing economic bankruptcy and received a letter of protection ( Iron Letter ) from the city. From 1759 he worked with the painter Friedrich Anton Lohrmann . In 1763 Deisch received citizenship in Danzig as a laborer . From 1762 he had a job in the city.
Act
Matthaeus Deisch created copperplate engravings, etchings and mezzotints. His views of Gdansk and the surrounding area are particularly valuable today. He also made numerous portraits. The artistic quality was judged critically by some contemporaries ( Daniel Chodowiecki once called him a botch , but was still in contact with him.)
