Matthew John O'Dowd

Matthew John O'Dowd is an Australian born astrophysicist . He is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Lehman College at the City University of New York . He is also the author and presenter of PBS Space Time on the PBS YouTube channel . He is a frequent guest on Science Goes to the Movies on CUNY TV and on StarTalk radio with Neil deGrasse Tyson .

Career

O'Dowd studies black holes and quasars using the gravitational lensing effect . To do this, he uses the Hubble Space Telescope and observes distant quasars that are in the neighboring galaxies of the Milky Way . These galaxies act like additional lenses that allow the telescope to observe black holes much better than would otherwise be possible.

O'Dowd is an Associate Professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department of the City University of New York . He is a research fellow at the American Museum of Natural History . Since 2015 he has been the author and presenter of PBS Space Time , a YouTube channel operated by PBS Digital Studios . O'Dowd is also a team member of the Black Rock Observatory , a mobile observatory that was unveiled at the 2012 Burning Man Festival.
