Matthew Allan Kemp (born August 8, 1980 in Canberra ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Kemp joined the NSL club Adelaide City after two years at the Australian Institute of Sport and scored six goals in 30 appearances in his debut 1999/2000 season. For the following season he moved to the Italian third division club SPAL Ferrara , but returned to Adelaide after just one season.

After Adelaide City withdrew from the NSL, Kemp moved to the successor team Adelaide United in 2003 , which he also belonged to when the A-League was introduced in 2005. In the 2006/07 season he reached the championship final with Adelaide, but he was unable to participate in the 6-0 defeat in the final against Melbourne due to a yellow card suspension. Kemp then turned down a contract extension at Adelaide and moved to the reigning champions Melbourne Victory on a free transfer .

After a rather mixed season, he was one of the top performers in the Melbourne defensive when he won the championship in 2008/09 and only missed one game of the season. In the final, Melbourne and the mostly deployed as full-back Kemp retained the upper hand with 1-0 against Adelaide United. In the following season he was able to confirm his form and came in January 2010 in the Asian Cup qualification against Kuwait to his international debut in the Australian national team . Just a month later, he sustained a serious knee injury in a league game and was out for several months. As a result, he also missed the final round of the championship when Melbourne failed to defend their title with a 2-4 final defeat on penalties against Sydney FC .
