The Matthias Claudius Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Oldenfelde part of the Hamburg district of Rahlstedt . It is located on Wolliner Strasse and is one of four churches in the Meiendorf-Oldenfelde parish.

Building the church

Since 1953 there was a community hall at Wolliner Straße 58, which was the first building used by the new community. The activities for the establishment of a complete parish center, including the pastorate and church, soon shifted to the property at Wolliner Straße 98, which is used today. The pastorate was established there in 1957 and the Protestant parish was founded there on February 20, 1959 in Oldenfelde.

In the first phase of construction, the parish hall and the free-standing tower were built in 1964. The church itself, designed by the architects Ursula and Klaus Löwe , only followed in 1988 in a second construction phase. Since 1990, a bronze statue of the poet Matthias Claudius by the sculptor Bernd Stöcker has stood in the green area next to the church .

In 1974 the parish of Oldenfelde was renamed Matthias Claudius parish. In 2001 it merged with the parish of the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Church to form the parish of Rahlstedt-Oldenfelde. In 2009 there was a further merger with the parish of Meiendorf. Since then, the name of the community has been Meiendorf-Oldenfelde parish.

Furnishing

The interior is determined by the shape of the roof and is made of brick and light wood. High windows ensure good lighting. The baptismal font, wall cross, altar and the altar candlesticks are made of wood to match the room. The pulpit is partly made of brick.

The small crucifix on the altar and the church mouse on the side of the brick pulpit are also by Bernd Stöcker .
