Matthias Freise
Matthias Freise (* 1957 in Hanover ) is a German literary scholar and Slavist .
Life
He studied Slavic Philology, West Slavic Philology and Philosophy at the University of Hamburg . He was Wolf Schmid's employee at the Slavic seminary there. After completing his doctorate with a thesis on Michail Bachtin's philosophical aesthetics of literature in 1992, he was a research assistant and senior assistant at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the University of Oldenburg . After completing his habilitation with a thesis on Anton Cechov's prose , he was the subject coordinator for literary studies and project manager at the humanities center for the history and culture of East Central Europe in Leipzig . He accepted a professorship for Slavic literature and cultural studies at the University of Salzburg . Since 2003 he has been teaching as professor for Slavic literature at the University of Göttingen .
His research interests are symbolism and avant-garde in Slavic literatures, literary and cultural theory, comparative issues and especially the authors FM Dostoevskij, Anton Cechov, M. Ju. Lermontov, Karel Capek, Bruno Schulz, Czeslaw Milosz and Aleksander Wat. He is co-editor of the Germanoslavica magazine and a member of the American Chekhov Society, the International Dostoevsky Society, the Karl Lamprecht Society for Universal History and the Societas Jablonoviana .
Freise publishes in German, Russian, Polish, Czech and Bulgarian languages.
Matthias Freise is with the Slavist Dr. Katja Freise married. He is the father of five children.
